Introduction and background notes (vocational context)
Preparation for employment can be very tasking yet crucial for individuals operating in a Health and Social Care sector. In recent time there has been a proven relationship between learning and employability. Skills that facilitate learning such as communication and interpersonal skills can also enhance individual employability in Health and Social Care. Employability skills therefore remain one of the essential, universal and transferable skills that are required by everyone to succeed in education and to work in the Health and Social Care sector. Indeed the government as well as the private sector recognise that there is a potential problem for learners in Health and Social Care when seeking employment, largely due to ineptitude towards the identification of certain behavioural and technical requirements linked to various areas of employment. The need to improve these skills has become necessary in order to support the Health and Social Care sector and the entire economy. It has therefore become obvious that employability skills be included in the curriculum for learners aspiring for higher education to support adaptability needed at work. Teaching and Learning in this module has been designed to help trigger self- awareness and reflective practice for students which in the long run would propel action plans to career growth.
In order to carry out task 1, assume that your Health and Social Care organisation has a scheme for its employees. Based on the self-assessment report of your own knowledge, experience, ability, skills, and performance, your organisation, would like you to participate in an internal employee promotional competition and CPD training workshop. You are expected to benchmark your knowledge, skills and abilities against national benchmark expectations from the workers in health and social care sector in the UK. Your line manager has asked you to write your own employability skills report. All the assessment criteria linked to this task should be based on your own personal scenario in the context of your organisation as described above. Also your discussion should be supported by relevant theories and concepts.

Task 1: LO1 Be able to determine own responsibilities and performance. (1000 recommended maximum word report)

To achieve M1, complex problems with more than one variable have been explored when developing a set of own responsibilities and performance objectives.
To achieve D1, you have to evaluate critically and ensure that realistic improvements have been proposed against defined characteristic for success when making recommendations for performance objectives.

Case Study Scenario
The Orchardville Company is a company limited by a promise with social firm status. It is under the umbrella of the Orchardville Society, a charity that assist adults and young people with learning Disability and Autistic Spectrum Disorder prepare for and secure employment. At present 25% of the work force have a learning disability including Mark who started a part time job earlier this year. Mark applied for the position of Domestic Assistant and a number of reasonable adjustments were made to enable Mark to accept the position.
First Mark completed a six week work trial in order for him to decide if he liked the job and what support requirement he would need. At the end of the trial a meeting was held involving Mark, his employment officer and the manager to discuss the outcome of the work trial and what reasonable adjustments would be required including:
- The procurement of different mops as Mark found it very difficult to use the industrial mops.
This minor adjustment enabled mark to confidently carry out this aspect of the job to same standard of cleanliness and at minimal cost to the employer.
- Mark also found it difficult to complete all the task within the three hours per day he was scheduled to work. The employer agreed to increase Marks hours by 30 minutes per day to enable him to comfortably complete all the tasks and not feel under pressure.
Today Mark continues to work at the Orchardville Company and he is being supported by the
Orcahardville Society Employment and Skills Service.

To achieve M3, you must demonstrate a coherent, logical development of principles/concepts for the intended audience in identifying effective time management strategies used in your work based problems.
What you must do: (Individual presentation)
The discussion surrounding your presentation revolves around a team base issue at your respective workplace. You will solve the team based issue for your guided Power Point presentation. You should address AC’s [3.1; 3.2; 3.3]
3.1 Explain the roles people play in a team and how they can work together to achieve shared goals.
3.2 Analyse team dynamics at your health & social care work place. [P3.2, M2]
3.3 Based on your analysis of teams in tasks 3.1 & 3.2; suggest alternative ways to complete a task as team and achieve the goals in Health and Social Care sector. [P3.3]
TASK 3 will be a 10 minute Individual Presentation
You will apply your chosen method to solving the quality problem in your work place. The presentation lasts 10 minutes only. The presentation dates will be over a range of 2 class days, therefore it’s important that you keep within your 10 minutes time limit.
- You must present your work as a PPT only. Failure to do so means you will fail the presentation.
- You should reference your work using a range of sources.
- Submit one copy (6 SLIDES PER PAGE) of the print out of your slides to your tutor.
To achieve M2, you must apply relevant theories and techniques to your analysis in relation to team dynamics in your health and social care workplace.

To achieve D3, you will have independently developed, examined using a range of innovative ways/ideas to
develop appropriate strategies for resolving the complex problem in task 4.1 using a range of ideas and options.
To gain a Pass in a BTEC HND Unit, you must meet ALL the Pass criteria; to gain a Merit, you must meet ALL
the Merit and Pass criteria; and to gain a Distinction, you must meet ALL the Distinction, Merit and Pass criteria
