According to Bergstram and Hamilton, organisations have different structures and these structures have a bearing on attitudes and behaviour. Each organization has a different culture and structure which makes them a different performer altogether. Behaviour of individuals working in these organisations also are influenced by the structure and the culture of the organisation.   As part of a management training programme in your organisation, you are required to undertake research into; two different types of organizations one of which should be a local company and the other an international company dealing in 2 different products or services.

TASK 1: Individual formal REPORT

GUIDELINES FOR ACHIEVING 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.2 and 2.3

  1. Describe different types of structures eg: flat structure, tall structure, etc.
  2. Describe the principles of a good organisational structure eg: division of work, centralisation and decentralisation, etc.
  3. Describe different types of culture, signs of culture and development of organisational culture
  4. Compare and contrast your chosen organisational structures and their cultures
  5. Discuss the relationship between an organisation’s structure and culture and how it can impact on the performance of the business
  6. discuss factors such as personality, perception, attitude, self-image, etc. which influence individual behaviour at work
  7. Explain the organisational theory i.e. scientific management, classical administration, etc.
  8. Discuss the functions of management
  9. Describe the nature of managerial authority generally seen in the organisation
  10. Evaluate the different approaches to management used by different organisations

Task 2: Individual Report

Your manager is impressed with your analysis on the previous report and wants to give you additional responsibilities with a promotion; therefore you are currently being reviewed for possible promotion to a senior supervisory role in your department and as part of your review you have been asked to prepare a concise booklet for aspiring managers which:

3.1: Discusses the impact that different leadership styles may have on motivation in organisations in periods of change

3.2: Compares the application of different motivational theories within the workplace

3.3: Evaluates the usefulness of a motivation theory for managers

 GUIDELINES FOR 2.1, 3.1, 3.2 and 3.3:

  1. Describe different leadership styles and compare the effectiveness of leadership styles in different organisations (such as which type of leadership is suitable to a Military organisation)
  2. Describe 5 different motivational theories
  3. Evaluate the usefulness of motivation theories for managers in the workplace

M3: Puts forward logical and coherent arguments about one existing business leader and justifies the motivation theory used by the chosen leader to motivate followers.

D3: Assesses the existing motivational theory used by a chosen organisation and proposes new ideas for motivating staff.


  • Analyse the leadership styles using one existing Business leader and justify the leadership theory and motivation theory used by the Business leader to achieve success in the organization


  • Using one of the chosen organisations, assess motivational theory used by the organisation and propose new ideas which should be practical and feasible for the organisation to motivate the staff

Task 3- Timed Assessment –February 10th   2016

A timed assessment will be released on the 31st of January. For students following the HD programme the assessment will take place at 6pm. For all other part time the assessment will be posted on Moodle for you to submit by the 10th February.
