Case Study/Background Info – Part 1

Reed Music (RM) is a private school that offers short music courses in south east London. Besides teaching several beginner courses on piano, guitar, drum, vocal singing, music sheet reading, etc. RM also has intermediate and advanced classes on the same above areas.

Due to increasing enquiries received over the last few months, Simon Cowell, director of Reed Music has decided to build a web site to give online information to customers rather than current paper-based brochures.

Description of problem to be solved

During a meeting, Mr Cowell has identified the following set of requirements to be incorporated in the website:

  • Create an easily navigable set of web pages that have a consistent look and feel.

  • Create pages that would give a list of all offered courses, and ideally classifying them into relevant categories with pictures and short description for each.

  1. Evaluation of 4-5 existing websites that offer the similar kind of services to its customers. (LO 1a)
  2. A storyboard for the site structure and navigation layout design. (LO 1b)

Apart from the above, Mr Cowell also wants:

  • Create a detailed description describes each course, its timeline and price to site visitors in an attractive style.

  • A web page that gives contact information about RM School and an online contact form so potential customer can send enquiry directly to the school’s administrator.

  • Course booking are currently being done through telephone, however, Mr. Cowell believes that online booking form can be developed to reduce heavy loads on school’s receptionists.

  1. Justify the usage of the various scripting languages used whilst you developed the website. (LO 3a)
  2. Review appropriate technologies to obtain the minimal functionality specified above by means of a complex set of linked interactive web pages. (LO 3b,c)

  2. Customer information would be retrieved from the database for any registered user who intends to make a booking via the website. Detailed documented evidences of form validation and testing. (LO 4b)
